Northumberland is home to mile upon mile of beautiful, unspoilt beaches. Feel the gorgeously soft, golden sand between your toes; most of it has been designated an Area of Outstanding Beauty.

Holy Island – 6 miles

‘Turn the pages’ of the Lindisfarne Gospels on computer at the Heritage Centre on Holy Island. Escape to the coastal retreats of Beadnell, Alnmouth and Druridge Bay for a memorable visit. Add them to your itinerary and don't leave without trying a fresh crab sandwich! But… remember that Holy Island is cut off by the tide twice a day.

Lindisfarne – 8 miles

Any trip to Northumberland must include a pilgrimage to The Holy Island of Lindisfarne, the very fountainhead of England's Christian heritage. The striking 16th century Lindisfarne Castle stands dramatically on the prominent rocky outcrop which forms the island, cut-off twice a day by the North Sea in an Area of Oustanding Natural Beauty. This romantic, enchanting Tudor Fort is packed to the turrets with small rooms full of intimate decoration and design, with views of the walled garden designed by Gertude Jekyll and stunning coastal panoramas.

Bamburgh – 13 miles

An unspoilt hamlet surrounded by beautiful beaches and overlooked by the imposing castle.

Alnwick Castle – 22 miles

To many people, their first sight of this glorious medieval castle can seem foreboding, and certainly it's history lacks nothing in drama and intrigue. Some of you may recognise it as a film location, for everything from Harry Potter and Elizabeth to Becket and Blackadder.
